PAUSE A WHILE IN PERTH
It’s a perfect place to arrive, especially if you only have a few days, and there’s no pressure to see all of West Australia – Perth is just wonderful for a few days.
Get Australianised, and get over your jet lag.
A city of clean fresh air, gardens and parks, and a lazy river to ride a boat or take a cruise.
The Black Swans that live up river, give the river its name, and are the symbol of Western Australia.
Perth has a good population of English immigrants the ‘£10 pommes’ flooded here in the sixties – so there’s a very definite English feel about Perth, that makes you feel welcome and at home almost instantly.
Spending time in the city is great fun – it’s an alfresco lifestyle. A picnic at Kings Park Botanical Gardens, and a walk through the tree canopies in the Treetop Walk. Away from the city Perth has some fabulous beaches, like Scarborough, just 20 minutes north of Perth, Scarborough Beach has spectacular views of the Indian Ocean.
Barrack Street Jetty, and the famous Swan Bells, is a hub of activity – cruise from here to historic Freemantle – make it on a Saturday to coincide with Freemantle Market day. Make it one evening and enjoy a ghost tour to the Freemantle jail house!
Also from Barrack Street Jetty or Freemantle are the ferries to Rottnest Island, and this is a fabulous day out. Rottnest has more than 60 beaches and 20 bays. Amazing coral reefs, with sands and clear waters, and most amazing of all…….. some unique wildlife. From afar, it looked like the island was infested by rats, and so it was called ‘Rattnest Island’ – looking closer the ‘rats’ are actually small marsupials – quokas – friendly and cute, like mini kangaroos complete with pouches and joeys!
Just a few days in Perth, will have you refreshed and ready for your big Australian Adventure – but don’t leave this sunniest city in Australia before trying the shops at Hay Street Mall, visiting the zoo, and tasting the fine wines!
Margaret River and the South West Tip of Western Australia dove-tail perfectly if you are in this part of Australia. A round trip from Perth of 4 days will take you on a gourmet wine tour visiting vineyards, tasting wines and cheeses. Your short self drive trip will take you to pioneer towns like Busselton and Albany and the famous lighthouse at Cape Leeuwin, where you can climb to the top and see the view.
So next time, don’t just Pause here in Perth… make it a Western Australian Holiday – there’s so much more to discover, thrill and enjoy!
