Jersey…by Gordon Wilkinson

JERSEY

by Gordon Wilkinson

Just an hour and five minutes from Gatwick on Flybe and you can be in Jersey.

It’s a great place for a short break, so it seemed ideal for my birthday celebration at the end of May. We chose The Grand in St Helier because of its prime location on St Aubin’s Bay with stunning views of the 16th century Elizabeth Castle. From here it is easy to get to the most popular attraction - the Jersey War Tunnels - which tell the story of the Occupation of Jersey during World War II and to Durrell Wildlife Park which Brenda had wanted to visit after reading Gerald Durrell’s 1956 book My Family and Other Animals.

It should have been quiet and restful… so we didn’t expect to hear engines revving up and cars and motorbikes racing along the promenade. However, we had chosen to visit at the same time as the Jersey International Motoring Festival, the largest annual motoring event in the Channel Islands. Our upgrade to Park View rooms came in very handy – we had The Grand-Stand view of cars and motorbikes doing sprints, hill climbs and stunts… what a bonus!
