Africa… by river!
Africa... by river!
Put the icing on the cake, and a cherry on the top! If you are planning a safari to Namibia, Botswana, Zambia or Zimbabwe then add something special to your trip – a few days on the Chobe River. Instead of chasing sightings of the animals in a bumpy jeep – relax on the deck of the Zambezi Queen and they come to you on the river bank.
Just an hour from Victoria Falls, you’ll find the boat on the Chobe River, a river that borders Botswana and Namibia. The Zambezi Queen has a middle name… luxury!
From your comfortable cabin to the fine dining, it’s hard to believe you are in the remote bush of Southern Africa.
I was lucky to get a chance to experience this unique adventure – up on deck was the place to be – buffaloes, elephants and hippos come for a drink, oblivious to us. So good to watch them in silent awe. Birds overhead – the fish eagles are magnificent! – and the most beautiful sun rises and sun sets over the river!
Our excursions were generally by speedboat. We would travel up and down the river to see what we could find and got quite good at spotting the animals and birds, even before the guides! We also had a ‘land’ safari in Chobe National Park and visited a local village, to see the ray of life. An American dentist in our group had brought bags full of toothbrushes and tooth paste which delighted the children!
So if you are looking for something special, and different, I can recommend the Chobe River and Victoria Falls; or the Chobe River, Victoria Falls and Cape Town; or the Chobe River, Victoria Falls and the Okavango Delta in Botswana – or any other mix that appeals to you!
It’s surreal, it’s magic… but are you going to take my word for it?
